Quite a few new members write to me with questions
about our Yahoo chat/info site. I thought I’d display some
of them, and our answers, here on this page for your
    convenience.

Why do you use the Yahoo network?

As mentioned, Yahoo is the best and largest network on the Internet
for truly interactive communications. They’ve been around a long time
and are very attentive to their users’ needs. We also host our website
through Yahoo, and I have found them to be absolutely unequalled in
professionalism and in assistance when it is needed. Simply put, I like
what works right, and Yahoo has always given us superior service.
We began with Yahoo in 1999 and when we became an official non
profit organization, it just made good sense to stay with them.

Is there a fee to join our group on Yahoo?

No. There is no fee or charge to join us there. The one prerequisite is
that you must join Yahoo first and set up an ID/email account with
them. There is no cost or fee for that, either. It only takes a few
moments of your time to register. All of your information is held
    private (See Yahoo’s Privacy section).

I sent in my application but have not heard back
    from you. What's wrong?

More than likely, you typed your email address incorrectly on your
membership application form. Yes, it really does happen sometimes!
Another reason is that you may not have given us permission to send
you any email (check your spam folders and/or settings).  This week
alone, we had three welcome letters returned to us as
"undeliverable". Two were from misspelled email addresses, and one
was due to our email not being allowed. Please send us an email and
let us know if you do not get a welcome letter within a few days.

I thought I joined the Yahoo Community group, but I
can't seem to access any of the features. What am I
    doing wrong?

More than likely, it is one of three things:

    1. First and foremost, you MUST register with Yahoo before you sign
up with our community/group. Members who do not register with
Yahoo first will only be able to access our main page, but will not be
able to access or use any of our features. Go to Yahoo.com and set up
an account with them, then respond to our invitation.

    2. You did not send the invitation back to us, as Yahoo requested.
Just getting it in your email is not enough. You must respond to that
invitation in order to verify your choice to join us.  If this happened to
you and you can't find it in your email anymore, please write to me at
avnrie@avnsupport.org for a new invitation. Please remember to send
it back after you open and read it.   Or......

    3.  You thought that joining our organization immediately allowed you
to enter our private Yahoo Community.
I wish this were so, but because we have such a wealth of information
to share (not to mention real time chatting and message boarding for
your enjoyment and support), we needed to find a system that could
accommodate it all.  Once you join our organization, then you are
eligible to join our Yahoo Community support area. A private invitation
is sent to you, and you must respond to that invite within 30 days if
you wish to join our interactive community on Yahoo.

You mention that your chat/info group on Yahoo is
private. What does that mean to me as a member of
    your group?

There are two types of groups on Yahoo: Public and Private. With
public groups, the general public can join by simply clicking on the
Join this group” button. There is no control over who initially joins a
public group; scammers, spammers, hawkers, sales people, disruptive
people, and all kinds of distracting elements can enter a public group.
The moderator has no idea who each member is, so if there is a
problem, there is little he can do about it other than to remove an
offending member. Meanwhile,  an offensive or disruptive former
member can continue to create problems outside of the group long
after he is gone, as he can still continue to contact others with the ID
names and email addresses he managed to collect! (And, remember, it
is very easy for anyone, especially a disruptive person,  to change
his/her  ID name or email/screen name, so he or she can continue to
harass people, seemingly 'in disguise'. You may never find out who
    the offending person is).

Except for the basic Yahoo TOS rules, there are usually few to no
guidelines in a public group, so members leave themselves wide open
for all sorts of problems and difficulties. Also, members have no clue
who the moderators are and what their qualifications may be..or not
be. It’s a kind of “free for all” way of doing things. And, remember, if
you participate on public message boards, you might be telling
personal things about your medical history and your life to people who
are total strangers to you; do you really know ‘who’ you are talking
with? That is highly doubtful. I think it may also be risky, depending
    upon your own circumstances.

In a private group, membership is by invitation only. The only way to
be invited to our private chat/info group is to join our organization
first. Therefore, we know exactly who is joining us, and why.  Since
our chat/info group has gone private, we have had no problems with
spammers, hawkers, salespeople, problem-makers, and others who
have an 'alternate  agenda.'  Our members can communicate with
each other in a safer, much more relaxing environment that offers
greater  peace of mind. We have a list of guidelines for everyone to
follow, which everyone appreciates. Things go along very smoothly
for us in our chat/info group and a great sense of family and
camaraderie prevails. Most importantly, no one is hassled, no one
feels pressured into or out of anything because that type of behavior
is not allowed. This is not so in a public group: with those, anything
    can happen and often does!

I don’t like message boards! Must I participate in
    yours?

No, of course not! You can use as much or as little of the site as you
wish. You do not have to write messages if that isn't your cup of tea,
but you are always welcome to read them at any time. Many people
join just for our vast libraries of links, files, and databases and that’s
fine with us. Along with lending some emotional support, we are there
to help spread knowledge about AVN, and if that is your main interest,
then you’ve found the right place!

I like chats. Why isn’t there anyone in your chat
    room when I enter it?

Well, first understand that our chat room is open 24-7, but the
probability of finding someone in it at the exact time you enter it is
most likely slim! Therefore, we hold scheduled chats and they are a
resounding success. Our Wednesday night chat begins at 8 pm,
Eastern Standard Time, and ends whenever (I’ve heard some people
stay as late as midnight; just stay as long as you like). Thursday night
the chat also begins at 8 pm - 'til whenever, Eastern Standard Time.
The chats are fun as well as informative, so just join us on those
evenings.  ** Note: you must be a registered member of our
organization to apply for chat room privileges.

What other features does the Yahoo chat/info site
    have?

There is a Calendar where we post all events; a Photos area where
members post their pictures; Our Databases area is really a group of
lists, covering many topics such as member’s interests, and members
grouped by joints affected with AVN (Hip people, Knee people, etc.)
Our Links area contains links to many hundreds of other quality sites,
covering so many topics that it would be impossible to list them all
here. The nice thing is that we’ve done all of the foot work for our
members, so they don’t have to spend hours searching the Web for a
specific topic.  And, our Files area contains documents authored by our
members themselves, again covering many topics and themes. It’s all
about caring and sharing, and in that, our group excels.

I can’t seem to get into the Yahoo chat/info site.
    What am I doing wrong?

** First, please make sure that you did register with Yahoo first, then
you must respond to our invitation. Just opening it up wasn’t enough –
you have to fill out certain items on the invitation and then click
“send”.  If you lost your invitation, you need to write to me at
avnrie@avnsupport.org and request a new one. If you did join and for
whatever reason left us and wish to rejoin, you also have to write to
me and request a new invite. Remember, only registered members of
our organization are permitted to join our chat/info group. If you
registered with our organization and have not as yet received an
invite to our chat/info group, please write to me. Also, please make
sure you are trying to sign in with the correct ID name, the same one
that you used to sign up with.
Note: you must have JAVA enabled to navigate properly around the
    site.

    Why should I join?

If you feel certain that you know everything about AVN that you could
ever hope to know or learn, then you won’t need to join us.

If you are absolutely at ease with your AVN and do not need or desire
contact with others who also have it, or wish to ask them questions or
to receive some moral support, then you won't want to  join us.

If you are quite sure you know all of the new advances in treatments,
procedures, and theories on AVN, and are totally fearless and
comfortable about facing surgery…then, you don't need to join us.

If you are surrounded by totally understanding and compassionate
people who also happen to know all about AVN and how it affects you,
and how you ‘should’ feel and what AVN is like,  then you really won't
need or want to join us.

If your doctor(s) are 100% knowledgeable and very experienced in
treating AVN and have all the right answers for you, then you might
    not wish to join us.

But, if you lean towards “No, that's not me” to any one of the above,
you just might want to join us. We’ve been lending moral support and
much knowledge to thousands of people over the years, so we must
be doing something right – and obviously, there is a great need for an
organization such as ours. With more than 20,000 new cases of AVN
being diagnosed in the US alone each and every year, it’s no wonder
an organization for knowledge and support for victims of this silent
killer of bones – AVN -- is so vital.

The choice is up to you; we are here for you if you need us. One final
note:  the invitation is good for only 20 days. You must respond to it
within that time, or write to me to issue you a new one.

Remember, our motto is “Keep on keeping on.”

We are here to help you to do that.
